Behaviour
At Manor Primary School, we are committed to creating a safe, respectful, and positive environment where every child can thrive and “be the best that we can be.” Our Behaviour Policy is currently under review and will be formally ratified by the Governing Body early in the Autumn term. The updated policy sets out clear expectations for behaviour based on our school values of Respect and Kindness, Responsibility, Teamwork, and Growth Mindset. It explains how we promote positive behaviour, recognise and reward pupils’ achievements, and respond fairly to challenges when they arise. We are also strengthening support for pupils with additional needs and enhancing our partnership with parents and carers to ensure a consistent approach between home and school.
Developing Positive Attitudes, Values and Behaviour
Pupils are expected to develop the following key habits, routines, and behaviours, in line with our values:
Respect and Kindness
- Listen attentively and follow instructions the first time.
- Speak and act with kindness, respect, and inclusion towards everyone.
- Treat others how they would like to be treated.
- Show good manners and walk calmly and quietly around the school.
- Respect differences and challenge all forms of discrimination, bullying or unkindness.
- Take care of school property and shared spaces.
- Demonstrate respect for staff, visitors, peers, and the learning environment.
Responsibility
- Be ready to learn and help create a focused learning atmosphere for others.
- Take ownership of their learning, behaviour, and personal growth.
- Make positive choices even without reminders.
- Wear the correct school uniform with pride.
- Reflect on their choices and make positive changes when necessary.
- Keep learning spaces tidy and organized.
- Be honest, take accountability for mistakes, and work to put things right.
- Follow school expectations without the need for reminders.
Teamwork
- Work collaboratively, valuing everyone’s input and perspectives.
- Communicate clearly, listen actively, and resolve conflicts calmly and constructively.
- Support and encourage others, especially during challenges.
- Take turns, share, and contribute positively to group tasks.
- Contribute positively to the class and wider school community.
- Refrain from behaving in a way that brings the school into disrepute, including when outside school or online.
Growth Mindset
- Show perseverance when tasks are challenging; keep trying and never give up.
- Embrace mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow.
- Set aspirational, personal goals and strive to achieve them.
- Accept feedback positively and use it to make progress.
- Be curious, ask questions, and take pride in personal improvement.
Rewards
At Manor Primary School, we believe that celebrating and reinforcing good behaviour is key to building a positive and respectful school culture. We use a variety of rewards to recognise pupils who demonstrate our school values:
-
Verbal praise and positive feedback given by teachers and staff during lessons and around school.
-
Class Dojo points awarded for positive behaviour linked to our school values.
- House Point Gems: each week, individual Dojo points are combined into house totals, and the top-scoring house is proudly awarded a gem to add to their display.
-
Headteacher’s awards and gold stickers for exceptional achievements.
- Raffle tickets are given out at lunch time, and a winning ticket is chosen every Friday.
-
Certificates and recognition in assemblies, celebrating individual and group successes.
-
Special responsibilities and leadership roles
-
Whole-class rewards when classes collectively earn points (e.g., themed days, movie afternoons, games sessions).
-
Celebratory events that recognise consistent positive behaviour and contributions to school life.
Our approach is designed to motivate pupils intrinsically, helping them develop pride in their achievements while fostering a supportive and inclusive school community.
Helping Children Make Positive Choices
At Manor Primary School, we believe that responding to behaviour is about guiding children to make better choices and supporting their personal growth. When behaviour falls below expectations, our approach is:
-
Calm and consistent – Staff use reminders, guidance, and restorative conversations to help children understand the impact of their actions.
-
Fair and proportionate – Consequences are applied in a way that matches the behaviour and takes individual circumstances into account.
-
Restorative – Children are given opportunities to reflect, repair relationships, and make positive changes.
-
Supportive – Additional help is provided where behaviour may be linked to special educational needs or other underlying factors.
More serious or persistent behaviours are managed by senior staff and may involve meetings with parents/carers and/or individual behaviour plans. Our goal is always to restore a safe, respectful learning environment where every child can thrive.
Class Dojo
We use Class Dojo as part of our behaviour and rewards system to encourage and celebrate positive behaviour. Children earn Dojo points when they demonstrate our school values. The Class and School Stories are also used to celebrate special events in school.
When behaviour does not meet our expectations, children may receive a ‘Needs Work’ Dojo point, which helps staff and pupils reflect on choices and focus on improvement.
Parents and carers can download the free Class Dojo app to see their child’s points, receive updates, and celebrate successes together at home. Invitations will be sent out to the parents/carers of new pupils.
